West Ham v Leeds 1971

Great game and strike by Norman bites your legs Hunter, someone must have been there, couple of years before my time, but remember some great games between us and Don Revie's Leeds from 73 onwards, especially with Bremner and Bonzo.

Great team they had back then, dirty northern bastard's mind.

The Times: "West Ham United were irresistible … Leeds United, though cruelly weakened by injury, played with much of their customary competence, but found themselves outmatched by West Ham's skills, their wit and their explosive shooting on this mild, misty night. It was a performance that had the gloss of greatness on it.

"All this has come a matter of days after the West Ham manager, Mr Greenwood, had publicly announced that he was looking for more northern steel to stiffen his inconsistent team. Last night we saw northern steel - and Leeds never sold the game short on effort and pluck - put to flight by purist southern artistry. West Ham, for all the grace they have brought to the game in recent years, can never have played better; not since February 1929 have Leeds surrendered seven times. Then they were beaten 8-2 in a League match - by West Ham at Upton Park.

The West Ham Way. Johnny Byrne's greatest game, Hurst and Sissons hat tricks. A football lesson for the team that dominated.

As a 17 year old I was on the north bank for this one. What I don't remember though are all those nippers running on the pitch to hug the players.
I preferred it when Bunter came on to chin the opposition.

I was playing football over Wanstead and listened to the radio hearing that Ferguson had broke his neck, great days.

We did have some good results against Leeds at home in those days.

I was present at the 1-1 home draw in 72 or 73 when Clyde Best went in goal after Ferguson had to go off and who could ever forget our 3-1 home win against them in 1973-4 when they won the first division championship? They only lost 4 matches that whole season and one of them was against us!

Our 7 -0 demolition of them in 1966 was my only worthwhile memory of these fucks.

Re: West Ham v Leeds 1971
Leeds were never a great side

They won most of their games by cheating, injuring opposition players, getting opposition players sentoff for retaliating & by feigning injury, intimidating the referee & total lack of sportsmanship

They were the dirtiest side I've ever seen & improved technology & the increased number of cameras at matches means we will probably never have to put up with their ilk again

Clough called it exactly right

Good riddance to them, they are now back where they belong

I was there. It was fucking freezing.

I went with my older brother and his mate, Kevin (who knew Bobby Howe), his old man (Jack, 5ft fuck all with a flat cap and a permanent roll up on the go), used to drive us up and park near The Boleyn.

We mercifully went for a pie and mash after in the Barking Road, we were all frozen.
